We know that girls can change the world – and Girlguiding’s Future Girl initiative is all about that, making changes today for our world tomorrow.
Future Girl is built around 5 topics that the girls have told us they care about – and one of these topics is Planet Protectors. Part of the topic pledge is “A world where recycling and reusing things are part of everyday life” – and this is where we need your help.
We would like to challenge our girls here in Somerset (and ourselves!) to reuse old pillowcases and transform them into dresses for Africa, by following the Secret Linen pattern.
Don’t worry if you’ve never used a sewing machine before, or if you’re a bit rusty, this project is a great way to reach out to friends, family and members of the community (including the Trefoil Guild) to come along and give your unit a hand. The only things we need to remember are that the dresses need to be machine sewn and sturdy, with finished edges and ties that are not made of ribbon, so the dresses are strong enough to survive in third world climates.
Margaret Maltby, our County President, will collect finished dresses and take them to Secret Linen, so you don’t have to incur the postage costs either. And we would love to share your photos and stories to inspire others.
