Somerspirit celebrates 25 years!

On Saturday 10 September, the team behind Girlguiding Somerset’s comet trio gathered with friends and supporters for a very special celebration.

The county’s sailing dinghy first took to the waters at Sutton Bingham Sailing Club over 25 years ago, and girls and young women continue to have the opportunity to sail on her today.

We were delighted to be joined by volunteers past and present to enjoy a BBQ and celebratory cake as we shared anecdotes from the past and looked forward to the future for Somerspirit and our young members.

It was a pleasure and privilege to welcome back Derek Tilley, our first instructor, and former committee member Liz Noon who, together with our County President, Margaret Maltby, had the vision to secure funding and purchase the dinghy all those years ago.

Attending were current volunteer instructors, including Ash Carrington and Paul Martin, supported by Linda Carrington.

Representing Girlguiding volunteers from across the county were Bev Osborne (County Commissioner), Ali Stone (former County Commissioner), Holly Jones (District Commissioner), Denise Eggington (former Outdoor Activities Advisor), Claire Edmonds, and Somerspirit Secretary Sue Leaver.

We were also delighted to welcome Club Commodore, Bryan Martyn, representing Sutton Bingham Sailing Club.

The team were wowed by a beautiful Diorama (scale model) of the sailing club. Created by Rob Pendry, he was inspired by watching young members from Chard at their recent visit.

The event was naturally tinged with sadness, taking place just a few days after the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II. County Commissioner, Bev Osborne, took the opportunity to reflect on Her Majesty’s deep connection with Girlguiding, including her roles as Guide and Sea Ranger, as well as her service as Patron since 1953.

The Somerspirit team are ready to welcome new volunteers, particularly those who hold RYA qualifications or who are experienced dinghy sailors. More dates will be available for self-serve bookings by units in the new year. For more details, visit our web page, girlguidingsomerset.org.uk/somerspirit.
