On Saturday 25 March girls from all sections took part in a day of activities focused on our environmental pledge to reduce, reuse and recycle in Somerset.

Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers took part in the all day event at the Canalside, Bridgwater.
Hygiene kits for girls in need
Girlguiding Somerset county president, Margaret Maltby, explained to the girls:
The drawstring bags, flannels and sewing repair kits you made today will help girls living in poverty in Tanzania.
They’ll be distributed with reusable period products by the Tumaini Fund to support their personal health and help them attend school every day of the month.

“I made that!”
The girls made over 175 triangles for county bunting. It will be used at events and celebrations for years to come.
One Brownie was fascinated to learn that the materials used included old neckerchiefs designed for Girlguiding’s centenary in 2010, before she was even born!
Look out for the bunting triangles you made at the Coronation Camp Out / Camp In which takes place in May.

Old tents, new bags
Trefoil Guild members helped the girls make their own canvas bags to take home. These were made from old tents which Jenny and Kay once camped in as girls!

Other activities included:
- Macrame plant holders
- Hand decorated wrapping paper
- Transforming old t-shirt into a bag for life
- Pompoms
- Furoshiki – the Japanese art of gift wrapping in a cloth
Thank you
Bev Osborne, county commissioner, thanked volunteers for delivering a fantastic event. She said:
I know there was a huge amount of preparation beforehand, but thanks to you, all the girls and young women who attended learnt lots of new skills and had great fun!
