7 reasons to volunteer with Somerspirit

Our volunteers at Girlguiding Somerset are looking for dinghy sailors to join the team. We’ve been sailing at Sutton Bingham reservoir for 25+ years.

1. You love being out on the water

It’s your getaway from the humdrum of normal life. Whether the sun is beating down, or the wind is picking up, you feel alive in the dingy.

2. You are ready to share your passion for sailing with the next generation

You understand the value of time outdoors and adventurous activities. It’s something which is instilled when you’re young, and sticks with you for life.

3. You don’t need your own boat

We know that sailing can be expensive! It’s one of the reasons we’re so keen to reach as many girls as we can from all backgrounds. There’s no need to have your own boat to enjoy time on the water with Somerspirit.

We fund club membership fees, insurance, boat maintenance and any other running costs.

4. You want to set your own volunteering schedule

We’ve changed the way we operate at Somerspirit to put volunteers in control. When would you like to sail? We’ll pop those dates and times in our sailing calendar, ready for them to be snapped up by local Brownie, Guide and Ranger units.

Are you a morning person? Start at 10am on a Saturday or Sunday morning.

Prefer afternoons? Start at 12noon or 1pm, the choice is yours.

Would you rather dedicate 3 or 4 full days a year rather than several half days? Let’s do it!

5. You’re qualified to RYA Dinghy Level 3, or are happy to be assessed

There’s no expectation you’ll be teaching girls to sail – you’ll be taking them on a sailing experience.

If you’re ‘qualified by experience’, we’ll spend some time sailing with you before putting you forward for formal assessment.

We’ll ask you to complete Girlguiding’s recruitment process, which includes a DBS check and safeguarding training.

6. You live within easy reach of Sutton Bingham sailing club

We’re based just outside Yeovil, close to the Somerset / Dorset border. You can claim the cost of travel to and from the club at standard rates. If you’re happy to travel from a little further afield, that’s fantastic.

7. You want to help all girls know they can do anything

It’s what we do at Girlguiding, and it’s something you’re ready to commit to.

At Somerspirit that may be supporting a quiet, anxious or disabled girl to step in a boat for the first time. You’ll give them the confidence that they are safe. It’s the most rewarding feeling as a volunteer. You know that they’ll remember sailing on Somerspirit as one of the highlights of their experience in Girlguiding.
