Yeovil Together celebrates our diverse communities

The team from Girlguiding Yeovil were delighted to take part in Yeovil Together on Sunday 2 July 2023.

Organised by Somerset Diverse Communities, the free event brought together hundreds of people for a cultural celebration at Westlands Entertainment Venue in Yeovil.

Girlguiding Somerset county inclusion adviser, Zahari (they/them), said:

‘We had a great afternoon at Yeovil Together. It proved to be a truly warm, welcoming and inclusive event.’

We help all girls know they can do anything

Our volunteers spent time sharing the fun and adventure on offer through Girlguiding with families.

We planted seeds, made ‘armpit fudge‘ and crafted friendship bracelets.

We shared stories of the adventures open to girls aged 4-18, and of course, to adult volunteers!

New to guiding or already a fan?

For some families, this was the first time they’d heard about Girlguiding. Other adults reminisced about the fun they enjoyed in Brownies and Guides.

Linda (she/they), joint Girlguiding Yeovil division commissioner, said:

‘The good news is we have opportunities for every girl and adult to enjoy in Girlguiding today.’

How do you join Girlguiding? It’s simple.

  1. Register your interest. Head to girlguiding.org.uk and choose ‘volunteer’ or ‘register a child’.
  2. Choose where to volunteer. Provide your contact details, then you’ll see a map of local groups to choose from.
  3. We’ll get in touch. A volunteer will get in touch and arrange a meeting.
  4. Try out Girlguiding. Find out what it’s all about.

You don’t need to have been involved in guiding before or have loads of time to make a big difference. Whatever your skills and interests, whether it’s volunteering with girls directly or supporting behind the scenes, there’s a role to suit you.

How much does Girlguiding cost? There are no costs for volunteers. Most units charge a termly fee for girls, however we can provide funding if needed. We have a preloved uniform shop in Somerset, so affordable uniform is available for everyone.

Delicious food and stunning performances

As our stand overlooked the stage, we were treated to some wonderful music and dance.

Our also volunteers enjoyed the opportunity to try out their Bhangra dancing skills! We heard everything from a Polish beatboxer to primary school ukulele players and dancers from many communities.

Thank you to the organisers for a wonderful celebration:
