Six Somerset Girlguiding members have achieved something remarkable: every single one was selected at Region for International Opportunities (INTOPS).
Their journeys will soon take them to Croatia and India, but before they pack their bags, Poppy, Leah and Ivy, 3 of the 6 selected guides/Rangers, have taken a break from their busy fundraising schedules, and shared their experiences of the selection process with Gemma, CIA; County International Adviser for Somerset – from the first application to the moment they discovered their placements …
✨ The Application Stage
“It sounded like a great opportunity, and I didn’t have anything to lose by applying and going through the selection process”. Ivy Sledge, Guide in Frome, transitioning up to Rangers.
“I saw the opportunity to make new friends and to step outside of my comfort zone. It’s an amazing opportunity to go abroad; and I enjoy travelling”. Poppy, Ranger with Somerton 1st Rangers
For many, the application and selection weekend was nerve wracking. Yet, it was also seen as an opportunity to challenge yourself and was the first step in proving their commitment to international Guiding. The girls spoke about how the experience will build confidence, develop new skills and give opportunity to meet new friends.
🎯 County Selection
“When I am around people I don’t know; I can be quiet and socially awkward. However, I felt very proud of myself for getting selected for the regional trip and then proud and very excited about getting selected for my 1st choice option”. Poppy, Ranger with Somerton 1st Rangers
Despite nerves, all the girls would say “Give it a go, it’s an enjoyable experience”. These experiences can and are often different to normal guide camps; as it will test you in different ways. It’s all about working together, making friends and experiencing something new.
🌐 Region Selection
“During the selection weekends I attended I really enjoyed meeting other guides and rangers from across the county. Everyone was so friendly, and the challenges and activities were great fun and pushed me to get stuck into everything. It was such a fun and memorable experience, and I have met people who have become good friends. I can’t wait to travel to India with them!” Leah Miller, Guide from Shepton Mallet.
At Region, the stakes were higher. The girls reflected on how they pushed themselves to stand out while staying true to their personalities. There was an immense feeling of both pride and excitement when they had heard they had been selected.
