Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

Press Release

Girlguiding Somerset were delighted to be selected to play a special part in the Platinum Jubilee by hosting one of 70 Girlguiding Beacons that formed part of the final beacon chain on Thursday 2nd June,

The beacon lighting was the finale to a fun filled evening that saw Girlguiding members past and present, and members of the community, come together and participate in a range of different activities including axe throwing and archery, storytelling and making s’mores, treasure trails and circus skills at the iconic Bishop’s Palace in Wells. Members of Girlguiding and Taunton Gang Show sang the specially composed Jubilee song “A Life Filled with Grace” before the beacon was lit by a team of Fire Performers from Wookey Hole Circus.

The Queen is Girlguiding’s Patron and has had a long-standing personal history with guiding since joining in 1937 at 11 years old alongside her sister, Princess Margaret. The Queen experienced all the fun of guiding and became our patron in 1952 – the same year she took the throne.

Girlguiding is dedicated to creating a better world for girls and young women, and we empower girls, we give them space to grow and we ensure that each one of them can get involved – no matter what their background or ability.

We can only do this because we have an inspirational network of volunteers who give their time so that girls get their voices heard, do great activities and feel included and special.
